With repeated facial expression and skin folding, fine surface wrinkles progress to deeper creases, which may portray a less desirable appearance. Persistent facial lines, especially those involved in negative emotional expressions, may unintentionally portray to others the look of worry, anger, anxiety, disgust or sadness, despite one's own positive internal feelings. Regardless of the cause of facial creases or folds, safe and successful treatments for reduction or elimination of these problems are available. Injectables that either temporarily weaken the muscles or act as volume fillers serve to soften or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and produce a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. Your desires and goals are thoroughly discussed and given full consideration by Dr. Barr prior to any decision to undertake a specific treatment. Treatments for facial wrinkles are performed in a convenient, private and safe office setting. All injections are performed by Dr. Barr herself.
Prominent forehead creases, brow furrows or eye lines (crow's feet) produced by repeated use of the muscles of facial expression may be effectively treated by reducing the function of specific facial muscles. Botox is a sterile, purified protein produced in the laboratory. Botox, injected in small amounts into facial muscles, binds to the nerve endings supplying the muscle and prevents nerve impulses from traveling to the muscle. When injected into muscle, it blocks the muscle around the area injected for a typical period of 3-4 months. The resultant weakening effect on the facial muscle temporarily reduces or eliminates previous skin creasing and new skin creasing is avoided. This makes Botox effective for both the prevention and treatment of these wrinkles.
Fillers (Radiesse, Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane) Injectable fillers are formulated for the treatment of deeper lines and folds such as those found around the cheek and mouth. They can also be used as a supplement to botox or peels in the treatment of finer wrinkles. Another application of fillers is to enhance bony highlights such as your cheek and chin. Fillers can additionally produce full, defined and youthful lips. Each filler has different properties uniquely advantageous for distinct indications. Dr. Barr can discuss with you which filler is right for you.
Although surgical techniques are still used to resolve the downward decent of facial features such as the cheeks and eyebrows, the concept of volume enhancement by fat transfer is revolutionizing facial aesthetic surgery. To understand this concept, think of the face as a three dimensional structure that loses volume with aging. The loss of volume in the face is similar to a balloon that loses air or volume. As air is removed, the balloon becomes lax and wrinkles. In the face, the loss of volume occurs mainly in structures and components just underneath the skin, in the subcutaneous layer. Volume is important because it provides support and structure for the skin, thereby keeping the skin tight around the cheeks, eyes, and mouth. As the loss of volume progresses the skin becomes less taut and we witness the development of wrinkles, creases, and furrows. Simply removing or pulling excess and sagging skin may not be enough, and can actually lead to a stretched or pulled appearance.
Newer techniques seek to restore youthful contours by replacing what the aging process has taken away. The process of facial volume loss affects some people by creating hollowness around the eyes, causing the eyes to look deeper set within the eye sockets. Other signs include hollowing in the temple and cheek areas. We have found that using one.s own fat to restore lost volume is an excellent method to bring back softer and more youthful contours. Our methods are based on microdroplet techniques that achieve smooth, long lasting contours, with minimal downtime. Fat transfer procedures can last longer than any other injectable filler available today with very little risk of complications. The technique of fat transfer or augmentation can be combined with facial rejuvenation surgery as well as performed as an isolated procedure.
